LWU Veterans Appreciation Luncheon 11/11

COLUMBIA, KY. (10/27/2026) As the nation winds down its celebration of the semiquincentennial of America's founding in 1776, this year's Lindsey Wilson University Veterans Appreciation Luncheon will honor the founding of the nation's six military branches.

Lindsey Wilson's 24th annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at VFW Post 6097, 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia.

The luncheon is free and open to all area veterans and their spouses.

In addition to the meal, the luncheon will include a short program for veterans and their spouses.

"I know Nov. 11 is such an important day to our region's veterans, and it's also an important day to the Lindsey Wilson community," said Lindsey Wilson Dean of Students Chris Schmidt, who helps coordinate and oversee the event. "For nearly a quarter of a century, the luncheon has been a very small way for the university to thank the men and women who answered the call when asked to serve their country."

The birth of America's armed forces predates the signing of the Declaration of Independence by more than a year. In fact, three branches of the U.S. armed forces -- Army, Navy and Marines -- were founded before the nation.

The Continental Army was created by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, followed by the Navy on Oct. 13, 1775, and then the Marine Corps on Nov. 10, 1775.

As the nation's national security needs evolved, so did the branches of its armed forces. The Coast Guard can trace its roots to the Revenue Cutter Service when it was established by Congress on Aug. 4, 1790. The modern Coast Guard was created when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Coast Guard Act on Jan. 28, 1915, merging the Revenue Cutter Service with the Lifesaving Service.

President Harry Truman established the Air Force on Sept. 18, 1947, when he signed the National Security Act of 1947, and the Space Force was established on Dec. 20, 2019, when President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act.

"Just as our nation has many stories about its founding, so do the branches of our armed forces," said Schmidt. "But one thread that runs through all of the branches of our armed forces is a commitment to 'support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.' The men and women we will honor and recognize at this year's luncheon have been exemplars of that commitment."

The LWU luncheon was started in 2003 as part of Lindsey Wilson's centennial year celebration, and it's been held every subsequent year, even during the COVID-19 pandemic when university employees and students made meals ready to eat and worked with VFW post members to deliver the MREs to area veterans.

"This luncheon is always one of the highlights of our school year for our students who assist at it because it reminds them what it means to be committed to something bigger than yourself," said Schmidt. "The veterans we serve every year are living role models to our students."

Reservations for the Lindsey Wilson Veterans Appreciation Luncheon are not required. For more information, contact the Lindsey Wilson Office of Student Services at 270-384-8036.

2026 Vendor Rules

The Holiday Bazaar is a local craft market organized by the Adair County Extension Homemakers. Money generated from the Bazaar supports scholarships and educational programs of the Homemakers. The Bazaar will take place on Saturday, November 21st from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm CST at the Adair County Extension Office.

Register

Registration for the Bazaar is due by November 18th at 4:30 pm CST. To register, return this signed vendor sheet with payment to the Extension Office. The office is located at 409 Fairground Street, Columbia KY 42728. Anyone may be a Bazaar vendor, including non-Homemaker members. After 37 tables are sold, no new vendors will be accepted. First come, first served. A will-call list will be kept until the Bazaar.

Cost

There are two cost options for vendors to setup at the Bazaar.

Option #1 Join Homemakers

To join Homemakers costs $12 and you receive the full benefits of homemaker membership. Then additionally, to setup at the Bazaar will cost $15. This is a total cost of $27, $12 membership + $15 setup fee = $27 total. Already paid 2026 members do not need to rejoin.

Option #2 Setup as a Non-Member

Setup at the Bazaar for $30 without joining homemakers. Additional tables will cost $15 per table. Please notify the office at the time of payment if you would like extra tables. You may not bring your own tables.

Types of Vendors

The bazaar is intended for vendors who are profit seeking. However, up to six non-profit vendors will be allowed this year. Non-profit vendors will be placed in Room C. Please speak to Dylan Gentry for more information.

Wifi

Wifi is available for vendors. However, there are no assurances that wifi is secure. Caution should be exercised when executing credit card payments.

Items Not Allowed

The Bazaar is limited to handmade/locally sourced items only. Re-sell items are not allowed. The bazaar is a family friendly event. Yard sale items, political items, junk, obscene material, illegal items, etc. are not allowed. Weapons of any kind are not allowed to be sold. Vendors who bring banned items will be asked to leave without refund.

Electricity

Electricity for vendors will be very scarce, but a limited number of outlets will be available based on table assignments. Accessories powered by batteries are the safest bets. Unsafe use of electricity, such as plugging multiple extension cords into one, overloading the outlet, frayed or exposed electrical wires, and tripping hazards are not allowed.

Setup

Setup for the Bazaar will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, November 20th and conclude at 6:00 pm. Setup will then resume the day of the Holiday Bazaar beginning at 8:00 am on November 21st.

Vendors will be supplied a table and two chairs, the measurements of the rectangular table is 72x30 inches. Vendors may purchase an additional table for $15 per table. Vendors can not bring their own additional table. Vendors can not setup their booths in a way that will block other vendors, walkways, or exits.

Takedown

You may begin packing up your table at 1:30 pm on Bazaar day. If the crowd begins to dwindle at an earlier time, you may pack up earlier.

Gift Cards

Vendors are no longer required to provide door prizes. Instead, the Homemakers will sponsor 10, $5 gift cards to be used exclusively at the Bazaar. Customers can redeem these gift cards at participating vendor booths. Vendors can then turn in the gift cards to the Homemakers for reimbursement. These gift cards will be given away throughout the day and are valid only at the Bazaar.
