State officials are urging drivers to exercise heightened caution as Kentucky deer-vehicle collisions reach a seven-year high, with more than 3,400 incidents recorded. The surge comes as the region enters peak fall breeding season, a period when increased deer movement sharply elevates the risk of roadway accidents.
- Brake, Don't Swerve: If a deer appears in your lane, slow down and apply the brakes steadily. Swerving often leads to worse outcomes, such as hitting oncoming traffic, trees, or running into ditches.
- Reduce Speed: Drive below posted limits in wooded areas or during low-light conditions to allow for faster reaction times.
- Expect Groups: Deer rarely travel alone. If one crosses the road, assume others are following right behind.
- Utilize High Beams: Where oncoming traffic permits, use high-beam headlights to spot the reflective glint of deer eyes further down the road.
